Many people face the problem of choosing the right snare drum for their drum sets. To make sure that your choice will be smart you need to figure out what type of music you are going to play. Different types of snare drums exist today. They produce different types of sounds. Each drummer chooses the type of sound according to his or her personal taste and preferences. However, the genre of music that you are playing remains the key factor in choosing the type of snare drum for your drum set. Snare drums could be specially designed for jazz, rock, metal, punk, funk music and so on. Let us take a closer look at major types of snare drums.
Jazz snare drums are usually made of either wood or brass. These snare drums should be played with brushes, but not drum sticks. Jazz snare drum is usually fourteen inches wide and six inches deep. Its head texture reduces muffling and is usually light or moderate.
Rock snare drums sound louder than jazz ones. They are usually made of steel to be heard over electric guitars. A typical rock snare drum is also fourteen inches wide, but five and a half inches deep. Its drum head is usually heavy coated. This allows getting some muffling.
Metal snare drums sound really loud. They also have a bright timbre comparing to other types of snare drums. A typical metal drum is thirteen to fifteen inches wide and eight inches deep. This means they are larger than both jazz and rock snare drums. However, some smaller metal snare drums could also be found on the market today. Most metal snare drums are made of metal or synthetic material. Aluminum, bronze and brass are often used to create metal snare drums.
Punk snare drums come in many different types. Most of them are 15 inches wide and five and a half inches deep. Punk snare drums could come with various drum heads. Many various tuning types are also available. These snare drums are usually as loud as high hat cymbals.
The last type of snare drums to mention here is funk snare drum. It produces a unique sound which is highly accented. Funk snare drums also come in various sizes. Their widths are usually about 13 or 14 inches and their depths could vary a lot. Funk snare drums are usually tuned really tight, but they still produce a full bodied sound.
It is obvious now that snare drums could be different. And you should be very attentive when choosing the one for your drum kit. If you are not experienced enough, you should probably get a regular snare drum that comes with your drum kit. You will be able to upgrade later on.
